I’ve promised you a blog full of love stories, and although this first love story isn’t of a romantic nature, it’s a love story that has irrevocably impacted my life.
I fell in love with photography many years ago. I began exploring the amazing diversity this industry has to offer. I dabbled a bit in nature photography, architectural photography, pretty much all types of photography but it was when I eventually began photographing couples-in-love that my heart swooned. That was it! I decided after that very first shoot that I wanted to dip my toes into the wedding industry.
My first step was to find a mentor! How to do this in a very competitive, yet isolated, industry? My answer was Craigslist! I searched day and night, sent out a lot of emails, trying to find a position as a second shooter, or assistant, or, heck, even a gopher! I got some responses but none of them felt right. I knew in my heart that if I was going to do this, then I was going to do it right! I wanted to work with someone who loved love as much as I do. Someone who would laugh (or at least not frown in confusion) at my bad jokes. But, most importantly, someone who would inspire me to be better photographer & business person!
When I received an email from Gillian (owner of soundlikeyellowphotography) it was like a breath of fresh air. Finally someone who seemed like fun in an email! I responded immediately! I was so excited! ….and then I never heard back. For almost two whole weeks! I was heartbroken. So being the
annoying tenacious person that I can be, I sent her a few charming emails trying to touch base. Turns out she was just busy moving back to the big city and had put a temporary hold on her employee hunt. And just like that, I was back on track to achieving my dream of one day working in the wedding industry!

The next year of my life can be classified as a whirlwind. I don’t think I’ve ever learned so much in such a short time period! Gill brought me along to engagement shoots, events, weddings, fashion shoots and even included me in totally profesh business meetings hosted over warm cups of green tea. It was pretty much the most inspiring year of my life.

And that, my friends, is my Craigslist Love story.
